President Nicolás Maduro took the constitutional oath on Friday, January 10 in the main hall of the Federal Legislative Palace before the supreme president of the Legislative Branch, Deputy Jorge Rodríguez, as the only legitimate president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in the presence of more than 200 international guests, pledging to complete his mandate and fulfill all his duties, repeating: “I swear by history and I swear by my life to respect and apply the Constitution of the country.”

More than 2000 representatives of governments, social movements and political parties from more than 125 countries from all continents participated in the acts and celebrations of the inauguration of President Maduro for a new mandate, including the presence of the delegation of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and to be with the Venezuelan people on this historic day in which the President-elect decided to swear again before the Venezuelan people in the streets, in front of the Republican Palace of Miraflores, with a large influx of people and foreign guests, saying:

“Today I swear by the honor and dignity of the homeland, today I came to swear before the Legislative Assembly, but I wanted to be here in the same place where twelve years ago we all swore by Chávez.”

Maduro added that the reason they are here is because the Venezuelan State as a whole has exercised its right to self-defense against a global conspiracy hatched by the United States and its supporters in Latin America. “It was these adversaries who turned Venezuela’s presidential elections into a global election. The people of Venezuela have defeated imperialism and its diplomacy of deceit.”

In a clear message to those who oppose the Bolivarian process, Maduro said: “You have not been able to defeat us, and neither you nor anyone else will be able to defeat this people”. He stressed that this will be so because it is not about a person, it is not about Maduro, it is about the people and their will.

President Nicolás Maduro won the elections held in July last year with 51.95% of the votes, defeating his opponent Edmundo, of the far-right fascist movement, who obtained 43.18% of the votes.

Maduro described how the last six years symbolize the war against imperialism and the 500-year struggle in the national territory against all forms of hegemony and are repeated by continuing the construction of socialism in Venezuela, deepening the Bolivarian Revolution and continuing the legacy of Commander Hugo Chávez Frías and the national hero and liberator Simón Bolívar.

In recent years, Venezuela has faced numerous plots to overthrow the legitimate and elected government of Venezuela, including an attempted paramilitary coup in May 2020, known as “Operation Gideon”. That plot was neutralized by the country’s armed forces.

The Venezuelan President added that, since the July 28 presidential elections, security forces had arrested 125 people from 25 different countries accused of “terrorism” and of being involved in alleged plots to attack public services. He accused the U.S.-backed extremist opposition of being linked to the detained foreigners and called for a state of high alert to be declared ahead of the presidential inauguration on January 10.

At the same time that President Maduro was inaugurated, the U.S. government announced a $25 million reward for his capture and several new sanctions against Maduro and members of his government. The U.S. government, which supports the opposition represented by Edmund Gonzalez, has attempted to overthrow the electoral process and the legitimate government of Venezuela, however, these attempts failed in the face of the will of the people.
