Tens of thousands took to the streets across more than 100 Italian cities to mark the 81st anniversary of the country’s liberation from the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini and Nazi occupation in 1945, in a nationwide wave of mobilization that extended beyond commemoration into a powerful expression of contemporary political struggle—placing Palestine at its core.
Demonstrations swept across Rome, Milan, Genoa, Turin, Bologna, Venice, Florence, Naples, and Palermo, where marches, rallies, and public initiatives were organized by political parties, grassroots movements, and trade unions reaffirming that the fight against fascism remains ongoing in new forms.
Protesters carried slogans linking Italy’s historical resistance to present-day struggles against rising far-right forces and systemic racism across Europe. Palestinian flags were prominently displayed, and chants in support of the Palestinian people underscored a growing perception that standing with Palestine today is a continuation of the anti-fascist legacy.
Participants emphasized that the resurgence of far-right politics and exclusionary policies across Europe has reintroduced the question of liberation in a modern context—one in which Palestine has become a global symbol of resistance against colonialism and oppression.
Speakers and organizers stressed that solidarity with Palestine has moved beyond humanitarian concern to become a clear political stance against structures of domination, calling for intensified mobilization and increased pressure on European governments to end their support for Israeli policies.
Observers note that the scale of participation and the centrality of Palestine within Liberation Day events reflect a significant shift in Italy’s public consciousness, where historical memory is increasingly intersecting with contemporary struggles for justice and self-determination.
