Occupied Jerusalem | Palestine Republic – Special
The decision of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, to approve a bill allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners has triggered widespread Palestinian and international condemnation, amid warnings from human rights organizations about the grave implications of such legislation for thousands of Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons.
Human rights institutions stated that the adoption of such a law represents a dangerous escalation in the policies of collective punishment practiced by the occupation, and a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and international conventions related to the protection of prisoners. These organizations emphasized that introducing the death penalty within the context of military occupation could open the door to further violations against Palestinian detainees.
For their part, Palestinian institutions strongly condemned the decision of the Knesset, describing it as a “legislative crime” targeting Palestinian prisoners and entrenching policies of repression within Israeli prisons. They stressed that Palestinian prisoners constitute a central pillar of the Palestinian national struggle, and that any legislation targeting their lives represents a clear violation of international norms and human rights conventions.
In the same context, international human rights organizations called for urgent action by international bodies, particularly the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, to halt this legislation and prevent its implementation. They warned that moving forward with such laws could expose Israel to international legal accountability.
International solidarity movements and rights campaigns have also urged European governments and the broader international community to take concrete steps to pressure Israel to reverse this decision and ensure the protection of Palestinian prisoners and their fundamental rights.
This decision comes amid growing international criticism of Israeli policies in the occupied Palestinian territories and increasing calls for respect for international law and an end to measures targeting Palestinian civilians and prisoners.
