A Brief History of Irish-Palestinian Relations

Ireland has been among the first nations to support the Palestinian cause. Since the 1980s, many Irish politicians and activists have drawn parallels between the Palestinian struggle for freedom and Ireland’s fight for independence. This solidarity has been evident in diplomacy and civil society, with Ireland being one of the first countries to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.

In 1980, Ireland officially recognized the PLO and continued to champion the Palestinians’ right to self-determination. In 2018, Ireland took a significant step by passing a law prohibiting the import of goods from Israeli settlements in occupied territories. This marked a major milestone in its support for the Palestinian cause and its endorsement of the economic boycott of the occupation.

Escalating Tensions: Ireland’s Criticism of Israel

Relations between Ireland and Israel have historically been tense, especially in recent years. Ireland has been vocal in its criticism of Israel’s policies in Palestine, particularly regarding settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and the treatment of Palestinians.

Tensions escalated further following the genocidal actions of Israeli forces in Gaza, starting October 7, 2023. Ireland condemned these actions and joined South Africa in filing a lawsuit against Israel at the International Criminal Court.

Ireland’s Bold Responses to Israeli Retaliation

In retaliation to Ireland’s stance, Israel closed its embassy in Dublin. The Irish government responded by announcing plans to turn the former embassy building into a Palestinian museum. Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris declared, “Israel will not silence Ireland for criticizing the war in Gaza.”

Public reactions mirrored official positions. Dublin witnessed celebrations near the closed embassy, where participants raised Palestinian and Irish flags, underscoring global solidarity and support for just causes against war and genocide.

Future Outlook: A Tense but Principled Relationship

The tensions between Ireland and Israel are rooted in profound differences over the Palestinian issue. Ireland remains steadfast in its advocacy for Palestinian rights, recognizing the Palestinian state and opposing Israeli settlements in occupied territories.

As Ireland continues to stand with Palestinians, its actions serve as a reminder of the enduring power of solidarity. The bond between the Irish and Palestinian peoples grows stronger, reflecting shared values and a commitment to resisting oppression.
